Metacognition and Self Regulation- Module 1

1. What is metacognition?

Metacognition is a process by which an individual is aware of his or her own brain processes that occur during learning. In other words, metacognition is thinking about thinking. It can also be described as knowing about knowing. The goal of using metacognitive strategies is to make a person’s thinking visible to themselves and others, as well as to achieve learning outcomes.

(A) Discuss how the following beliefs deter learning.

Learning is fast. Some students tend to skim reading materials rather than thoroughly reading them with comprehension. Although skimming can be helpful at some point by providing gist, it would not allow students to concentrate on all the details a reading material provides.  Truly comprehending materials needs careful reading, planning and reviewing.

Knowledge is composed of isolated facts. Most students have the tendency to memorize, even verbatim, unnecessary key points without really getting the concept or the main idea of what is being read rather than actually getting the main idea of what is expected to be learned. Some student might use this inefficient learning strategy by studying long hard but in the long run they fail. Instead, students should be able to explicitly comprehend what are they reading about.

Intelligence is an inborn trait. Some students tend to be pessimistic when they find a specific subject challenging. They feel so negative about it that they assume that people can be naturally bad or good at a certain field. But this not true at all, being good at a certain field or subject takes a lot of hard work and patience.

“I’m really good at multi-tasking”. Surprisingly, multi -tasking is not really effective at all because it might not just lose our focus but also we might just compromise the quality of our work.

(B) Describe beliefs that contrast with each and how such can enhance learning:

Learning is fast. Learning rather takes time. At some point or another, everyone has crammed for a test and I would be lying if said I didn’t.  However, procrastinating and cramming really have some quite negative effects. When we cram for a test, our brain does not retain all information that is expected for us to remember. Reading materials overnight does not help either. Learning rather takes time. It involves advanced planning, thorough reading and reviewing.

Knowledge is composed of isolated facts. Learning requires mastery. Students are expected not only to memorize certain jargons and terms but to get a good grasp of the main core or the main concept by explicitly comprehending a learning material at hand.

Intelligence is an inborn trait. This is rather a myth. We shape our own future. We need to commit time and effort in order to succeed in our goals.

“I’m really good at multi-tasking”. Myth no. 2. Stop trying to be a hero: We can’t do everything at once. Study needs concentration and effort.  In order for students to succeed with their studies, they should shut out distractions like studying while texting, checking social networks and checking e-mails. Every distraction will reduce the amount of time for learning and will increase the time it takes to learn a material and in the long run will increase a chance for  a bad grade.

2. What is self-regulation?

“Self-regulation is not a mental ability or an academic performance skill; rather it is the self-directive process by which learners transform their mental abilities into academic skills. –Barry Zimmerman

Why is self-regulation (critically) important in distance education?

Self-regulation is very important for distant learners as they are the ones who control their own learning progress. They need to deploy specific learning strategies or methods and then observe how well those strategies and methods are working.

3. How shall I study to optimize learning in this course?

In order to optimize my learning in this course, I need to a have a good time and tasks managements skills by meeting deadlines and completing assignments effectively and efficiently. In addition to that, I need to device effective study strategies, develop a workable plan for improvement, and set realistic goals.

4. In what ways will keeping a learning journal helps me learn better?

A journal is an indispensable tool for me because it allows me to monitor my progress as I go along with the course. By keeping records, I can intimately express my thoughts with no hesitation, track down the areas I am having difficulty with, facilitate my wins and losses and reflect on the things that I’m a having a deeper understanding with.
